Feature Ideas

Hey there and welcome to our feature request forum for The Events Calendar, Event Tickets and all of the premium plugins we develop provide on TheEventsCalendar.com!

We’re always looking for new and awesome ways to improve our products. We think they’re pretty great out of the box, but we also know that there are often things that could make them even better for how folks like yourself use them in the real world. Our tools help the right people, get to the right place at the right time. How can we improve our products and make them super awesome for you and your users? That’s where we can use your help!

If there are features that our products do not currently support but you think would be a huge added value for you and lots of other people, then please share them here with us. The submission form will walk you through a few quick questions to get the ball rolling.

Before posting your idea, here are a few tips that will help make your request stand out and succeed:

  • Look to see if someone else has suggested the same idea, or something very similar. Many ideas are being submitted and it’s very possible that another request already exists. In that case, add your vote to the existing request.
  • Be as descriptive as possible. What does the feature do? Where would it be located? Who would use it? How does this improve the overall experience of managing an events calendar in WordPress?
  • Use mockups, if possible. Pictures are worth a thousand words and having a visual often brings a greater level of clarity to an idea.

Please not, this is not a place to get support or ask questions about how the plugin works. If you need help, please visit our help desk. If you use our free core plugin, you can post in our forum on WordPress.org.

I suggest you ...

  1. Rebuild a fully-functioning Facebook import by scraping data

Facebook is still the #1 place for most people to post events. Although the official FB api is still stagnating, there are other solutions that can work just as well (in addition or in place of the current Tribe Extension).

    Possibilities:
    1. Use the .ics feed. Thats what Time.ly and other competitors are doing.
    2. Parse the URL. This method (used by geodirectory: https://wpgeodirectory.com/social-importer-v2-beta-released/) lets you get information thats neither in the .ics or the *old* API.

  2. Add names/aliases to imports

iCalendar imports don't have the ability to be named, which makes working with them confusing – I have a whole bunch of imports called "calendar", and I don't know which is which.

  3. Extend date range in event aggregator to allow more than the next 3 months to be imported

I have imports to make from calendars which are only seasonal, e.g. some special events in september only. Unfortunately I cannot aggregate them because i can only go 3 months into the future.

More options would be appreciated here, at least 12 months (or even unlimited if possible and of course on your own risk). I hacked it in now myself but that's not the best solution obviously.

And would the amount limit not still be in place?

(and for the record, I am using the custom url to import from other tribe event calendars)

  4. Import from Active.com and RunSignUp.com - both have APIs

Would be great to pull from both of these sites. They have APIs for this and affiliate programs. Displaying events from these sites could be a revenue generator.

  5. Enable Additional Fields support in Other URL imports

I believe that the use case is a valuable one. We have a group event calendar whereby having Additional Fields import capability could be utilized to easily customize various event listings coming in from various "Other URL" scheduled imports from participating organizations. Everyone would use the same set of Additional Fields to specify information about their event. We would then use these field values as variables for controlling the ultimate display of the event item at runtime.

  6. Add more frequency options to Event Aggregator automatic imports

Right now, the automatic import frequency options in Event Aggregator go from hourly to daily with no options in between. Those are hugely different for how up to date the calendar would be. I'd like either a few options in between (ie every two hours, every three hours, every six hours) or the ability to manually choose the frequency.

  7. Merge locations

OMG I love Event Aggregator. But now that it's importing from third party calendars (Facebook and Google Calendars etc) the locations section is a mess of duplicate locations. I don't know the correct terminology, but could there be a system which allows locations to be merged, and it learns the terminology (so it knows that "the flying nun" and "flying nun" are the same location). Thanks!!!

  8. suppress category import in Event Aggregator

When importing events, the assigned category often comes with it. I believe this is other wordpress sites. I would like a way to suppress importing other calendar's categories. Just makes a mess and then I have to delete the category.

  9. Import Google Calendar attached images as event image

I am quite surprised this feature has not been included in a prior iCal Importer update or the release of Event Aggregator.

Can Event Aggregator import the attached image in Google Calendar and use it as the event image for Wordpress? I know this can be done as some other platforms already do this.

I have hundreds of events on my calendar, and adding an image to every single one is not an option.

    Thank you!

  10. Add "Frequency" to bulk actions for scheduled imports

The ability to select multiple scheduled imports and switch the frequency (daily, hourly, weekly, etc) would be great. I often need to update several imports at a time depending on seasons and going one-by-one is rather tedious.

  11. Option to remove events not present in a reimported iCal feed

This option would allow for events that get deleted from an iCal feed to be automatically deleted from The Events Calendar as well. So if you are importing an .ics calendar from a different site, such as Google Calendar or Outlook 365, and you delete the event there it will be deleted from the The Events Calendar on the next import.

The iCal format is dedicated to event creation, and does not contain any data on events that have been deleted. However, with this option checked the iCal Importer could assume that any event no longer present in a given…

  12. Import ATTACH field as defined in the ICS spec

Google Calendar and the ICS spec both define the ATTACH attribute.
    GCal like

    ATTACH;FILENAME={filename} FMTTYPE={url}

Here it is in the ICal spec https://www.kanzaki.com/docs/ical/attach.html

Import this data as meta data

  13. A filter for mapping attributes in aggregator

Before the request is sent to the aggregator api, add a filter so that weird attributes on the event host can be mapped to sane attributes in the aggregator server before they are sent to the receiving TEC calendar

    for example XYZ-ATTRIBUTE => ORGANIZER

where XYZ-ATTRIBUTE is an attribute that is served from the originating host and ORGANIZER is defined here https://www.kanzaki.com/docs/ical/organizer.html

  14. Add songkick or bandsintown integration

I would like to be able to create a calendar of live music in my city using your events aggregator feature

  15. Allow imports from Ticketmaster

Would be nice to be able to import events from Ticketmaster (using their Discovery API?)

  16. Notifications for Pending Imported Events

When a new import has been made and the event is set to "waiting for approval" an e-mail is sent to one or more (pre defined by admin) addresses with a message saying "you have new events to approve".

  17. Add a search to the scheduled imports

I have 7 pages of scheduled imports and sometimes need to find one of them. Would save a LOT of time over the years if I could just search instead of browsing through 7 pages. Please add to the next upgrade!

  19. API to create new scheduled imports

Provide an API for creating new scheduled imports to be executed in Event Aggregator. We need to import thousands of automated import sources to aggregate from on various schedules. An API should enable us to extend the plugin to allow importing these scheduled imports from an external data source. We would like the ability to provide all the information required for creating a scheduled import in a single object or array.

  20. Include [View-Event] link in notification of newly imported event

When a new event is imported a notification is given which includes a link to any new venue or new organizer. However the new event itself is not linked.

The new event listing is likely to be the view that one is most likely to want to look at to see if it has rendered correctly, or to edit some personal content to the event.

It could be a simple fix to add [View your event listing] to the notification.

This is what is currently shown:

    Import complete!
1 new event was imported. 1 new image was imported.
    1 new…
