Feature Ideas

Hey there and welcome to our feature request forum for The Events Calendar, Event Tickets and all of the premium plugins we develop provide on TheEventsCalendar.com!

We’re always looking for new and awesome ways to improve our products. We think they’re pretty great out of the box, but we also know that there are often things that could make them even better for how folks like yourself use them in the real world. Our tools help the right people, get to the right place at the right time. How can we improve our products and make them super awesome for you and your users? That’s where we can use your help!

If there are features that our products do not currently support but you think would be a huge added value for you and lots of other people, then please share them here with us. The submission form will walk you through a few quick questions to get the ball rolling.

Before posting your idea, here are a few tips that will help make your request stand out and succeed:

  • Look to see if someone else has suggested the same idea, or something very similar. Many ideas are being submitted and it’s very possible that another request already exists. In that case, add your vote to the existing request.
  • Be as descriptive as possible. What does the feature do? Where would it be located? Who would use it? How does this improve the overall experience of managing an events calendar in WordPress?
  • Use mockups, if possible. Pictures are worth a thousand words and having a visual often brings a greater level of clarity to an idea.

Please not, this is not a place to get support or ask questions about how the plugin works. If you need help, please visit our help desk. If you use our free core plugin, you can post in our forum on WordPress.org.

  1. More sophisticated related events results

This is an idea to improve the “related events” feature on Event Calendar.

As of today, this feature basically only relies on categories and tags to suggest related events, which is very basic to say the least. There are free WP Plugin out there like “Yet Another Related Posts Plugin” that are based on a customizable algorithm to suggest related posts based on more than simple categories and tags.

For instance, I could imagine that in addition to categories and tags, related events could be based on geography (ex: other events in Colorado / other events within 80 miles from…

  2. Please provide an option (maybe an extension) to use abbreviations in US & Canadian state/province names

Please provide an option (maybe an extension) to use abbreviations in US & Canadian state/province names: New Hampshire (NH), South Carolina (SC), British Columbia (BC), Prince Edward Island (PE).
Many websites (including ours) use the abbreviations instead of the default full state name, which is a clumsy workaround and results in a dotted line under SC, BC, etc. (unable to reproduce this here).

  3. Show Date (Tuesday Oct 2) as Featured Image if no featured image assigned.

Is there a way to show Date as Featured image instead of grey calendar icon?

Allow the map view to be set as either satellite or road map, instead of defaulting to road map.

  5. Allow save custom recurrence rule set and apply to new event

I'd like to be able to create a set of recurrence rules, with both regular occurrences and exclusions - and then save them as a custom named ruleset that I can apply to another event.

We have many events that run on a regular basis outside of school term-times. We can manually exclude the dates that fall within school holidays, but it would be a massive timesaver to only have to do this once and save it as for example "school holidays 2018" so that we can apply this custom set of rules to any other event. This has broader…

  6. Bring an Android & iOS app for adding Events directly to website.

    Greetings,
I am writing this to give you a suggestion to develop an Android and iOS app for your Event Plugin. I am a freelancer an often use this plugin for my clients as I love it. Unfortunately, Many Clients do not want to login to their dashboard to add an event. They often say if there is any way to add events from mobile phone or if they can add an event on Google Calendar, it should be added on Website Events page too on auto. So I face such feedback. Today I thought to give you a suggestion…

  7. Add option to reorder zip and city for certain countries

In quite a few european countries, the usual (and also "correct" in terms of what postal services expect on an envelope) way to write addresses is like this:

    Venue Name
    Street 23
    12345 City
    Country

While the notation of street and number ("123, Park Avenue" vs. "Hauptstraße 17") isn’t an issue (since it’s only one field in the database), addresses like "Berlin, 12345 Deutschland" (instead of the correct "12345 Berlin, Deutschland" are quite disturbing.

I am aware that src/views/modules/address.php could be customized by the user, but I would strongly suggest to add an option to reorder zip and city. This…

  8. have an option for setting defaults for the meta fields. Such as defaulting to "All Day Event"

It would be great if the Event Settings included options to set defaults. I'd love to be able to default new events to ALL DAY, rather than having to check that box every time.

  9. Update the Countdown SHORTCODE to include next event functionality

The Events Calendar is a great plugin and very useful for a lot of situations. My one major suggestion so far is as follows:

It would be very helpful to add the "countdown to next event" functionality to the Countdown shortcode. The widget doesn't always fit into a sites design and having to update the current shortcode every time an event passes is quite cumbersome.

The shortcode can be styled using css to greater effect in some cases.

There was a functions.php code addition that someone added in the support forums for this in 2016 but it tends to break…

  10. Option for "all day" events placement in one day page

Please add an option to put "All day" event at top or bottom in One Day page.

There are events that starts at a specified hour, but actually they are always put after "One day" events

  11. Shortcode to display all Event Categories used

I would love to see a shortcode that scrobbles all event categories used (with filter parameters built in, of course) in much the same way that Wordpress can scrobble all post categories by default in a sidebar widget. Also, some kind of automated Javascript that gives you the option (maybe in the settings or back-end) to specify which pages you'd like to display the event category widget on (i.e. all event-related pages, everything under /event and /events) would be awesome.

I could definitely see the utility of this feature in other applications besides just a sidebar event categories widget, but…

  12. customize shortcode colors

I used the WP customizer to style the default event page, but those settings don’t carry over when using shortcodes on other website pages. Without being able to set the style (primarily the bg colors for tables, title colors, cal info text etc) for the various calendar instances when using shortcodes, I'm unable to use them at all since they don't match the branding of my client site (currently using Avada theme) and are thus difficult to read by default. The purpose of me using a premium plug-in like this is to avoid having to customize theme files and stylesheets,…

  13. Allow x Number of Upcoming Recurring Events to Display

It would be great to be able to show more than just only one upcoming event in a recurring series. Ideally this would be per recurring event series so you could customize it different for different recurring events. This would be helpful in situations where one recurring event dominates the calendar for the next few weeks, but you still want to be able to show more than just one.

  14. allow user to save/star events

Allow users to save, star or favourite events. So they can plan which events they would like to attend. This would be a huge value-add to the end user where there are a lot of events to choose from and they may want to attend a few.

  16. Featured Image for Calendar Share

    Featured Image for Calendar Share

If you want to share your calendar on Social Media (like LinkedIn or Facebook) those sites will automatically pick up an image to display whether you like it or not.

At the moment there is no way to control that image in the Calendar settings. By default Facebook or Linkedin will just pick up the first available image from your website which in most cases, will have nothing to do with your Events Calendar.

All Tribe need to do is add the option in settings to upload an image you want to display when you…

  17. Upcoming Events Sidebar Widget Needs to be Clickable to Open Full Calendar

Please make it so when people click on the top of the calendar image of the sidebar widget it opens the page with the full calendar -- or make it so I can set this up.

Invariably I watch people new to my site try to do this. I have tried to do it. Other calendars do it. Why doesn't the Event Calendar do it. Did I just miss not setting it up right?

    Thank you.

  18. Event statistics report

Our organization would like an easy way to compile event statistics for a specific time period (calendar year, for example). TEC doesn't include any such reporting functionality and I'm not aware of any 3rd party solutions to this other than using an SQL tool.

Data that we would be interested in includes:

    • number of events in the time period
    • number of tickets sold in the time period
    • total revenue for the time period

    Thanks!

  19. Private Link Events without need to log in

We had an organization we wanted to allow to purchase tickets before going on sale to the public. However the event gets posted to our calendar and we'd rather it not be seen by the public until the general sale. This seems like something many business and organizations might want.

  20. Allow Featured Events to Display at the Top of the Event List Widget

The display from the Event List widget looks better when there is a Featured Event with image at the top. Therefore, I would like an option to show the next Featured Event (or two or three) at top, followed by the non-featured events.

I can almost do this now by using two Event List widgets, one above the other. The top one can be set to "limit to featured events only." If the the bottom widget could be set to "limit to non-featured events," that would do the trick.
